Doug Melvin and I seem to share a media relations philosophy that I wish I could impress upon others. A trade or acquisition rumor is a waste of time UNLESS it becomes worth it to explain to you why the rumored possibility was silly, unbeneficial and not going to happen. That doesn’t mean we can’t have fun and discuss the realistic price the Milwaukee Brewers would have paid if they were serious about Roy Halladay. Which they are not.
Blue Jay migration to Milwaukee is historically less popular than Milwaukee migration north towards Canada. Sure birds fly south, but Milwaukee is hardly south of anything other than Minneapolis.

In the past decade or so Northwestern produced about a handful of NFL running backs (Jason Wright, Noah Herron, Damien Anderson, Darnell Autry) Although neither of the two tailbacks they lost to graduation this off-season will follow in their footsteps, they were pretty good. Had Tyrell Sutton, the team’s best all-around athlete, stayed healthy his senior season he probably would have held all the major school records for rushing upon graduating.

In an offseason where the top teams in the NBA have made substantial moves to improve their roster, Mark Cuban and the Mavs are trying to keep pace. Dallas has been active this summer re-signing point guard Jason Kidd, acquiring Shawn Marion in a four-team sign-and-trade deal, and signing Magic free agent center Marcin Gortat to an offer sheet.

Nothing fires me up like a series revival between true rivals. While Cubs-Sox always dominates Chicago headlines, true Cubs fans know that their real arch rival is, in fact, an Arch rival. Get it? See what I did there? The rival is the St. Louis Cardinals, and they have an Arch there! It’s funny! Laugh, dammit, laugh!!!

It’s been 72 days since Brett Favre was officially released by the New York Jets. That’s 1,728 hours in which Favre has been without an NFL team. With it came approximately 1,726 hours of Brett Favre news coverage.
The story has been well-reported (and by “well” I mean “over”), his NFL résumé has been thoroughly debated (and by “thoroughly” I mean “excessively”), and the phrase “final piece of the puzzle” has been uttered or written a total of 1.3 billion times.

Without downplaying his importance to the Cavs, let me just say this; $50 million over six years is A LOT of money to pay to a guy who has never averaged above nine points per game during his five-year NBA career. But the Cavs were handcuffed in a way considering if they didn’t pony up the money to bring Anderson Varejao back, there were little options for them on the free agent market to find a suitable replacement. (note: reportedly only $42.5 million is guaranteed but the total could reach $50 million if incentives are met.)

Holy Above.500 record Soxman! Before the Southsiders recent winning streak was snapped, the Sox won seven in a row. When last we tuned into this Sox Channel at the same Sox time last week, I was wondering whether the Sox had a legitimate reason to consider themselves buyers at trading deadline. Now they’re just two little games out of first place, the starting pitching has been clicking and the hitting has been coming around. The White Sox runs scored to runs against differential is finally now in the black, 365-362. So what got into this team? Did it just take awhile for the lineup shakeups to take effect or is something else at work here?

So I guess buying the Army fatigues in anticipation of joining the “Little General’s” ranks was a bit premature. That sucks because I thought the camouflage was rather slimming.

There’s a very popular website entitled “Stuff White People Like.” I’m guessing you won’t find the NBA featured there and that’s a crying shame because the Association’s level of play is as exciting and entertaining as it’s ever been! The game is taking off all around the world as most of the website hits for NBA content come from outside the United States.

When it comes to Illini junior point guard Demetri McCamey, perhaps his Coach Bruce Weber can describe him best. “If you study him over the course of time, he has very good games and a tendency not to be real consistent, this goes back way to high school and AAU and that’s where he’s got to mature. He has the big one and then average, average. He needs to be more consistent if we’re going to be a very good team because he can do things that other people can’t do,” Weber said this season.

The halfway point of the baseball season has been reached for the Chicago Cubs. Suffice it to say, things didn’t quite go as planned. What has happened? What will happen? Let’s take a brief, brief look back (mainly because that’s all I can stomach) and then a glance at the future as we try to figure out where this team is going to take us in this wild and wooly 2009 season.

After watching their two toughest competitors in the Eastern Conference make major splashes in the offseason, the Celtics put the full-court press on the free agent they wanted. The C’s sent their “Boston Three Party” as well as head coach Doc Rivers to woo Piston free agent big man Rasheed Wallace. If you are a veteran on the downside of your career, how can you say “no” to playing alongside the talent in Boston and a shot at winning a ring? You can’t.
